Bowler of the Season – David Payne

Gloucestershire opening bowler David Payne has been voted as 2020 Bowler of the Season after another successful season with the red and white ball.

Payne would finish the season with a grand total of 30 wickets in all competitions. He had the best economy rate of 2.09 in the Bob Willis Trophy for Gloucestershire. He also had the best bowling average with 14.21.

Payne missed the opening two matches of the season in the Bob Willis Trophy against Worcestershire and Warwickshire due to injury. In his comeback match against Glamorgan at Sophia Gardens, Payne took eight wickets in the match with five of his eight wickets arriving in Glamorgan’s first innings.

In the Vitality Blast, Payne took 16 wickets, equaling Ryan Higgins in the top wicket takers of the 2020 Vitality Blast for Gloucestershire. Payne has set an incredible achievement of being Gloucestershire’s leading wicket taker in T20 cricket for the fourth year in succession.

During Gloucestershire’s Finals Day defeat to Surrey, Payne reached 500 career wickets. In David Payne’s superb career, he has taken 277 First-Class, 115 T20 and 110 List A wickets. There is certainly no stopping Payne and we look forward to seeing him in action for the 2021 season.
