Academy Player Highlights - July Round Up

With the season in full force, our Academy players have had plenty of match experience throughout July – representing Gloucestershire in a variety of sides in differing competitions. Let’s look back at how our Academy Players got on, including their personal highlights throughout the month.

Gloucestershire 2xi vs Hampshire – 5th July

In a rain-affected draw against Hampshire – Will Naish, Tommy Boorman, Oliver Meadows, Praneel Choughule, Max Shepherd and Ahmed Syed all were selected for Gloucestershire’s Second XI.

Max Shepherd bowled in the 1st innings taking 2 for 61 along with Ahmed Syed who dismissed the opposition captain.

Against a particularly strong bowling attack, Tommy Boorman scored an impressive 58 not out off 134 balls on his debut to secure a draw in the second innings.

Somerset vs Gloucestershire U18’s – 11th July

Unfortunately, rain played a factor again as the match was abandoned after Gloucestershire managed to bat the first innings hitting 242/9 in 50 overs.

Oxfordshire 2xi vs Gloucestershire U18’s – 13th July

An opportunity arose for our U18’s side to travel to Sandford St Martin CC to play Oxfordshire’s Men’s Second XI, another exciting opportunity for our younger Academy players.

Oxfordshire took the victory by 3 wickets however Max Trotman scored 49 runs whilst Max Shepherd bowled a tight spell of 10 overs taking 2 wickets for 31 runs.

Gloucestershire U18’s vs Worcestershire – 18th July

In a timed red ball friendly, our U18’s side were lucky enough to play at the prestigious Cheltenham College against Worcestershire. Donning the whites and looking for some match practice in the longer format of the game, our Academy players stood up with Will Naish hitting 84 and Stanley Brown scored 64.

Max Shepherd again contributing with the ball, bowling 13 overs and taking 4 wickets for 60 runs.

Gloucestershire U18’s vs Cricket Wales – 27th to 29th July

The U18’s had their first 3 day match of the season against Cricket Wales, winning comprehensively by 141 runs at Rockhampton CC. A great chance for our Academy players to contribute with Oliver Meadows back in form hitting a superb 1st innings century, he was ably supported by fellow opener Tommy Boorman who hit 75. Stanley Brown followed suit, hitting 87* to give Gloucestershire an impressive lead.

Praneel Choughule backed up our batting display with the ball, taking 4 crucial wickets for 49 runs off 17 overs. Ahmed Syed promoted to number 3 in the second innings took advantage by scoring 55 and Max Shepherd shined again as he took 7 for 53 to wrap up victory for Gloucestershire.

Hamdi Saleem and Luke Charlesworth – Super 4s

Academy bowlers Hamdi Saleem and Luke Charlesworth were called up to the ECB Super 4’s festival at Loughborough University. Representing the South West side, they were playing along with some of the best youth players in the country.

Both Hamdi and Luke did themselves and Gloucestershire very proud with top performances from the pace bowling duo – below is Luke in action taking 5 wickets for 50!
