Second XI Championship - 22 July 2021

Gloucestershire won by 198 runs

Venue: Newport CC

Gloucestershire v Glamorgan

With the Royal London Cup approaching, our Second XI side travelled to play Glamorgan in a friendly 50 over fixture at Newport CC. The Gloucestershire line up included many first team regulars such as Ben Charlesworth, Tom Lace, Jack Taylor and latest signing Ben Wells who all wanted some valuable match practice before the campaign started. Skipper Graeme van Buuren won the toss and elected to bat first.

Proceedings got off to a wobbly start with George Hankins being dismissed by S Jardine for a duck in the second over. Ben Charlesworth followed shortly after as he was trapped in the crease LBW by left arm seamer JP Mcllory for 8 runs. This brought to the crease Tom Lace (57) and van Buuren who both looked in fine touch as they formed a partnership of 152 for the 3rd wicket, looking untroubled both hitting shots around the ground. Once Lace was dismissed with score on 161 for 3, the explosive Jack Taylor looked to take on the attack with a brutal 71 runs off 57 balls whilst van Buuren managed to notch up 3 figures, finishing with 105 including 12 boundaries. A late flurry from George Scott (37) saw Gloucestershire reach 330 for 7 in 50 overs.

In reply, Glamorgan struggled to form any partnerships to get their innings off to match the required run rate as wickets continuously fell. Struggling against the spin of Jack Taylor (2 for 6) and Tom Smith (3 for 15), the home side collapsed to 132 all out inside 35 overs with Gloucestershire taking the win by 198 runs.
