We Need To Improve Our Fielding - Hamish

17 June 2012

Hamish Marshall declined to blame his bowlers after Worcestershire ran up 213-2 to set up a 47-run victory over Gloucestershire in the Friends Life t20 clash at New Road.

In the face of such a big total, the visitors were bowled out for 166 in reply, skipper Marshall top scoring with 43, Kane Williamson making 37 and James Fuller a hard-hitting 36.

Moeen Ali (83) and Phil Hughes (78) were the batting heroes for Worcestershire, but after the game Hamish told this website that they had been helped by some poor fielding.

He said: "There was a run out chance in the first over and a dropped catch in the second. You cannot afford to allow good players to gain momentum.

"While there is work to do with bat and ball, I feel the main area we need to improve on is our fielding. We have a training day tomorrow to work on our skills.

"We have to support our bowlers better when we take on Northants at Bristol in our next game on Friday night.

"But there were areas of our game I was pleased with. We need power-hitters in the middle order and James Fuller showed he is one player who can fill that role.

"I think 170 was a par score on a good pitch so our batting was a decent effort. But when you are facing such a big total risks have to be taken almost from the start."

Jack Shantry claimed four wickets and Gareth Andrew three to secure Worcestershire the points.
