Dan's Efforts In Vain As Warwickshire Win

27 June 2012

Dan Housego's unbeaten 59 was not enough to save Gloucestershire from a seven-wicket defeat by Warwickshire in the Friends Life t20 match at Bristol.

Housego top-scored in a disappointing total of 122-7 after Hamish Marshall had won the toss, the next highest contribution being 13 from Ian Cockbain as left-arm spinner Paul Best returned 3-19.

Warwickshire reached their modest target with 11 balls to spare, Varun Chopra finishing unbeaten on 56, despite the best efforts of Muttiah Muralitharan, who claimed 1-19 from his four overs.

After the game skipper Marshall told this website: "It was probably a 140 pitch and our score was 20 runs light. The bowlers did their best, but as a batting unit we didn't give them enough runs to play with.

"Dan Housego played a nice innings and didn't get the support he deserved, If a couple more players had chipped in with even 15 or 20 we would have had a chance.

"Losing early wickets was a problem and we lost our shape in the middle order. The aim was to work the ball into the corners and take ones and twos, but we didn't do that well enough.

"We had put a lot of practice into that part of our game, but we didn't execute on the night. If we had scored 140 I think we could have put them under a lot of pressure chasing on a tough pitch.

The result left Gloucestershire with four points from five group matches. Their next game is against leaders Somerset at Taunton on Friday evening.
