Housego Starting To Feel At Home
23 March 2012
Dan Housego hit his first half-century for Gloucestershire in a narrow one-day defeat by Glamorgan at the County Ground.
The winter signing from Middlesex scored 62 off 82 balls, with 6 fours, as the home side ran up 202-4 from their 40 overs. Ian Cockbain followed up his unbeaten century against Cardiff MCCU with 63 not out.
Glamorgan reached their target off the penultimate ball of the game, Nick James making 55 and Mike O’Shea 48 not out as they replied with 203-7.
Off-spinner Jack Taylor took 3-51 for Gloucestershire and David Payne 2-52. There was one wicket each for David Wade and trialist Paul Muchall.
Ian Saxelby led Gloucestershire in the absence of Alex Gidman, who is nursing a slight hip problem, but hopes to return for the two-day game against Oxford University at The Parks, starting next Tuesday.
Alex watched the Glamorgan game and was impressed by Housego’s innings. “Dan looked a class act,” he said.
“He has been feeling his way back after shoulder surgery in January, but I have no doubt that he is going to be a real asset to us this season.”
The match was played with a red ball and without any restriction on the number of overs each bowler could send down.
“We treated it as though it was the last day of a county game and we were setting our opponents a target,” said Alex.
“We wanted to score 200 and take at least five wickets so both those objectives were achieved.
"Losing the game wasn't part of the plan, but it was very close and another good test for us.
"Pre-season is going really well. There is a good atmosphere in the dressing room and the fine weather has been a big help."
