Hamish Stands Firm As Wickets Tumble

24 May 2012

Hamish Marshall was unbeaten on 49 at the end of another tough day for Gloucestershire in the LV=County Championship match with Northamptonshire at Northampton.

The vice captain stood firm in a total of 156-6, made in reply to the home side's 411 all out. Chris Dent made 42 and Jonathan Batty had contributed nine to a stand of 23 with Marshall by the close.

Earlier Will Gidman, Alex Gidman, Ian Saxelby and Liam Norwell had finished with two wickets each as Gloucestershire's marathon stint in the field occupied more than 147 overs.

Northants had begun the day on 302-4 and were again contained by some accurate bowling, scoring only 64 runs in the first session for the loss of four wickets.

But as the day wore on their labours in the field appeared to take a toll on Gloucestershire's batsmen as Benny Howell, Kane Williamson, Alex Gidman, Ian Cockbain and Will Gidman all fell for single figure scores.

At the close of play Alex told this website: "I was again pleased with how we bowled, but it was another energy-sapping day and our batting looked a bit tired.

"The wickets weren't given away, but we just lacked a bit of zip. Hamish played beautifully and Jon Batty looked in a bit of nick so hopefully they can add to their partnership in the morning.

"The good thing was that all our bowlers came through a gruelling test with no injury problems. They stuck to the task well after what was a bad toss to lose.

"Tomorrow we have to show some fight and try to get ourselves back in the game."
