Hamish Century Saves Follow-On

25 May 2012

Hamish Marshall finished unbeaten on 117 as Gloucestershire rallied to make 268 all out on the third day of the LV=County Championship match at Northampton.

Unbeaten on 49 overnight, the vice-captain used all his experience to battle away for 195 balls, hitting 15 fours. It was his second century in as many games following his ton against Cambridge MCCU at Fenner's.

Hamish received excellent support from Ian Saxelby, who contributed 30 to a ninth-wicket stand of 90, which helped see Gloucestershire past the follow-on figure of 262.

But the visitors are still facing a last day battle to save the match after Northants posted 246-5 in their second innings to lead by 389.

Kyle Coetzer again proved a key man for the hosts, following up his 96 in the first innings with 86 off 127 balls, with 8 fours and 2 sixes, as his side moved towards an early declaration in the morning.

It was another tough examination for Gloucestershire's bowlers on a hot afternoon as Stephen Peters also scored a half-century, while David Sales contributed 33 before being forced to retire hurt shortly before the close.

The four wickets were shared by Saxelby, Will Gidman and Kane Williamson, who claimed 3-58 with his off-spin, and Gloucestershire again succeeded in keeping the run rate below four an over, despite Northants' strong position.

Now the batsmen will have to sell their wickets dearly on the final day to secure a draw and seven points.
