U13s Boys County Age Group - Season Review & Award Winners

6 October 2021

This year’s Under 13 Boys County team had a largely successful season, winning the majority of their games and producing some fantastic moments throughout the summer.

They unfortunately began with 2 losses against London Schools and Somerset respectively but then gained momentum and confidence as a team by winning the next two against Dorset and Shropshire very convincingly.

There were mixed batting performances from there on, but when individuals showed their skills the team began to flourish and a superb bowling and fielding display away to Devon restricted the hosts to 139 all out and set up a run chase that was secured by 10 wickets with Wilf Newton giving a batting masterclass scoring 83 not out off only 78 balls including 14 boundaries.

This game was directly followed by a huge 115 run success against rivals Worcestershire with skipper Logan Bowden scoring an unbeaten 103 off 95 balls, displaying great acceleration for his second 50 to set a formidable team total of 238 for 5.

The bowlers all performed well too, and in many of the matches this turned out to be the team's strongest facet, and it was very pleasing to see so many different wicket takers. They were also certainly backed up with strong fielding displays whereby the opposition found it very difficult to score at times and some of the catching, especially against Dorset and Devon was phenomenal and gained many praises from opposing sides.

The team performance of the year came against local rivals Somerset where they gained revenge from a poor defeat earlier in the season to win by 5 wickets, chasing 184 with 9 balls to spare. Everybody contributed to this victory and the team's culture and spirit was personified when young James Burton selflessly sacrificed his own wicket and unfortunately got run out from a direct hit via the boundary so that main run getters could stay on strike and complete the job.

U13s Coach Jon Tegg said it was an enjoyable summer for all involved and the squad played with passion, skill and huge desire to improve every game and were a superb advertisement for Gloucestershire County Cricket Club and can feel very proud of how they conducted themselves on and off the field.
