Royal London Cup - 02 June 2021

Gloucestershire won by 144 runs

Venue: Port Talbot CC

Wales vs Gloucestershire U18's County Age Group (Royal London Cup)

Our U18’s travelled to Port Talbot CC to play Wales for the second fixture in the Royal London 50 Over Cup competition.

Looking to continue their success against Somerset, Gloucestershire fielded a similar outfit to keep their winning formula. Gloucestershire won the toss and elected to bat with plenty of confidence going into the middle.

Gloucestershire openers looked in full control right from the start, with Academy players Max Trotman and Tommy Boorman forging together a partnership of 144. Trotman in particular looked dominant at the crease scoring 94 and Boorman ably supporting, looking solid as ever hitting a well compiled 53. Our middle order pounced onto the solid foundations created, with Praneel Choughule (37), Ahmed Syed (18) and Shay Sainsbury (28) all contributing to reach 272 in 49 overs once we were all dismissed. Credit to Wales’s opening bowler Ben Morris, who bowled terrifically taking 4 for 32 in 7 overs.

In reply, Luke Charlesworth bowled an incredible opening spell not allowing the Welsh batsman any real opportunity to score freely. Applying the pressure on their top order, this allowed wickets to tumble at regular intervals with Charlesworth, Will Naish, Praneel Choughule and Hamdi Saleem all chipping in. With the home side at 57 for 4, spinner Max Shepherd picked up the wicket of opener Callum Nicholls who fought hard for 34. Once he was dismissed, Shepherd executed great skill to end up with 4 for 40 to wrap up innings and dismiss Wales for 128 – giving Gloucestershire the win by 144 runs.

We would like to thank Wales for hosting at Port Talbot CC and appreciate their accommodation for us on the day. Our U18s side next Royal London Cup fixture is on the 13th June against Devon at Thornbury CC.
