Payne On Fire As Derbyshire Are Humbled
1 June 2012
David Payne took four of the last five Derbyshire wickets as Gloucestershire completed an emphatic win over the LV=County Championship Second Division leaders inside three days at Bristol.
The home side coasted to victory by seven wickets after being set just 85 to win, Benny Howell making 31 and Kane Willianson 29 before Alex Gidman and Hamish Marshall saw their side to the target.
Derbyshire had begun the day on 211-5 in their second innings and were able to add only 72 before being bowled out for 283.
Payne picked up the wickets of David Wainwright (2), Dan Redfern (77), Tony Palladino (4) and Tim Groenewald (0) to finish with 4-89 from 19.5 overs.
Will Gidman, who had run through the top order on day two claimed 4-50 from 21 overs, while Ian Saxelby returned 2-62 from 19,
Gloucestershire took 21 points to Derbyshire's three and after the game skipper Alex Gidman told this website that his team had opened up the Second Division promotion race.
He said: “I think we have done the rest of the league a massive favour by pegging back Derbyshire.
“They were the only side that had really got away this season and it was important to bring them back.
“Derbyshire have played good, solid cricket on a consistent basis and to beat them in the manner we did will give us a lot of confidence.
“Other teams will look at this result and believe they can catch the leaders during the second half of the season.
“Any side putting together two or three wins in the latter stages of the campaign can make up ground and challenge and that applies to us as much as anyone else.”
Alex added: “I was delighted to be set a target of less than a hundred.
“On that wicket against Derbyshire’s attack, anything over 140 would have been really tricky.
“But we bowled and batted well, put in a good all-round performance and kept ourselves in the box seat all the way through.”
The only downside was the injury suffered by opening batsman Chris Dent, who suffered a recurrence of the broken finger that ruled him out for six weeks last season. He will miss Monday’s CB40 game against Essex at Chelmsford and take a two-week rest.
