New Gloucestershire Cricket Board Coach Workshops

1 February 2012

Richard Dawson is among the former Gloucestershire players involved in a new Coach Development & Mentoring scheme run by the GCBCA and open to all coaches within the county

Thanks to sponsorship from Gray Nicolls and funding from Sport England (through the Sportsmatch programme) the GCBCA have been able to put together a programme of exciting workshops to help develop coaches confidence and skills. These workshops include:

  • Modern Fielding Techniques - Delivered by Chris Taylor
  • Tactical Awareness - Delivered Mike Smith (ex England & GCCC Professional)
  • Working with Young Fast Bowlers - Delivered by Paul Jarvis (England Women's Fast Bowling Coach)
  • Assessment & Development of Physical Competence - Delivered by Chris Bodman (GCCC's Strength & Conditioning Coach)
  • Batting Against Spin - Delivered by Owen Dawkins (GCCC's Academy Director)
  • Coaching Spin Bowlers - Delivered by Richard Dawson (GCCC Spin Bowling Coach & ex GCCC Professional)
  • Innovative & Creative Coaching Drills - Delivered by Lisa Pagett & Ross Farrer (GCB Level 3 High Performance Coaches)

Thanks to the funding support the cost of the courses has been able to remain low with each workshop costing £5 for GCBCA members and £10 for non-members.

The courses have also been organised around the county to ensure they are accessible and open to all coaches within each of the four districts.

At present the GCB deliver a host of generic coaching qualifications for coaches within the county of Gloucestershire such as the UKCC Level 1, 2 & The Club Coach Award course, with high numbers attending throughout each year.

In the past 5 years 534 volunteers have become certified coaches, the largest number across any of the South West Counties by over 100!

The new mentoring scheme will be the bridge between these qualifications and the support vehicle for coaches to ensure that they are practically using their coaching qualifications to support new and existing cricketers within local clubs.

Steve Silk, the GCB Cricket Development Manager, said: "We are delighted to be able to offer our coaches this exceptional support. For coaches to have access to workshops delivered by facilitators at the top of the game is something we are particularly pleased with.

"The scheme will ensure that we are able to continue to develop the level of coaching provision within the county as  well as target specific support for those coaches looking to grow opportunities for target groups such as Women & Girls and BME.

"It is another example of the Board's proactive approach to supporting our members, communities and partners. We are extremely grateful to Sport England for their support as well as the scheme's sponsor - Gray Nicholls - whose funding the award will be matching"
