Match preview | Surrey v Glos | Royal London Cup

18 August 2022

Gloucestershire travel to London to face Surrey at the Kia Oval on Friday in the penultimate group stage fixture of the 2022 Royal London Cup.

The Shire’s four-wicket defeat to Leicestershire at the Seat Unique Stadium on Wednesday means Glos must win their final two games against Surrey and Middlesex to stand any chance of reaching the knock-out stage.

Fifties from Marcus Harris and Jack Taylor, and a quickfire 45 from Tom Price were not enough against the Foxes, as the table toppers knocked off 263 with four overs to spare.

Taylor continues to impress with the bat, averaging 60.40 in the Royal London Cup this season.

Zafar Gohar bowled admirably picking up three wickets, including his 100th career wicket in List A cricket, but it was not enough to stop an excellent batting display by the visitors.

Surrey sit one place below Glos in the Group A standings after resigning Somerset to their sixth consecutive defeat on Wednesday. Decent knocks from Nico Reifer, Sheridon Gumbs and Tom Lawes saw the Londoners post above 300 for the first time in this year’s competition.

Dale Benkenstein selects a 14-man squad for the clash at the Oval, with Chris Dent and Dom Goodman dropping out from an otherwise unchanged group.

Chris Dent misses the match with an ankle injury, giving Ben Charlesworth another opportunity to open the batting with Ben Wells.

Seamers Paul van Meekeren, Josh Shaw and Jared Warner travel, as does spinner Tom Smith. Youngsters Will Naish and Ajeet Singh-Dale will hope to make their 50-over start of the season.

James Bracey keeps his place among the Glos batters, as does Ollie Price, whose excellent slip fielding against Leicestershire assisted Gohar in taking three wickets.

Here's your 14-man Gloucestershire squad to play Surrey:

Surrey squad: Ben Geddes (c), Nathan Barnwell, Josh Blake, Matthew Dunn, Nicholas Kimber, Tom Lawes, Yousef Majid, Conor McKerr, Ryan Patel, Nico Reifer, Cameron Steel, Amar Virdi, Tim Lloyd, Sheridon Gumbs

The teams last met in the Royal London Cup in 2021, when Surrey took the points despite fifties from Tom Smith and George Scott.
