Liam Takes Five In Emphatic Victory
6 September 2012
Liam Norwell gave another reminder of his immense promise as Gloucestershire moved off the bottom of the LV=County Championship Second Division with a resounding victory inside three days against Northamptonshire at Bristol.
The 20-year-old seamer took 5-51 in a Northants second innings total of 224 that featured half-centuries from David Sales and Andrew Hall.
That meant a 207-run win for the home side and 20 points from their third Championship win of the season, Now only one match remains, against Leicestershire at Grace Road, starting next Tuesday.
Batsman Ed Cowan will be available for that game before flying back home, having captained Australia A in England this summer in between two short spells as Gloucestershire's overseas player.
Northants were set a target of 432 when bowling out Gloucestershire for 311 in the morning session from an overnight 286-6.
But Norwell ensured they never got close, dismissing four of the top five batsmen as only Sales and Hall offered much resistance.
It was a good match for Gloucestershire's young seamers after James Fuller's five wickets in the first innings.
At the close Director of Cricket John Bracewell told this website: "James and Liam have shown how talented they are on a given day and now have to add the vital ingredient of consistency to their game.
"James will be going to play some club cricket in New Zealand this winter, while Liam will have a rest to cure some niggles before heading out to Australia to get some cricket in the New Year.
"We are looking to send most of our young players away this winter because it will be a building site here with all the ground development work going on.
"Liam hits the deck hard and is developing good skills bowling into the wind, which I like to see in a seam bowler.
"Hopefully, we can follow up this win with a good performance in our final game at Leicester and move further up the table.
"I don't think being bottom going into the Northants match was a fair reflection of how the team have performed. I have seen progress collectively in all formats of the game this summer."
