Hamish So Proud Of Big Win At Taunton
29 June 2012
Hamish Marshall was a proud captain after his 66 had led Gloucestershire to a memorable nine-wicket victory over previously unbeaten Somerset in the Friends Life t20 derby clash at Taunton.
Having restricted the big-hitting home side to 140-8, the visitors romped to the target with a massive 5.2 overs to spare to inflict a hammering on their arch rivals.
Benny Howell (55 not out) shared an opening stand of 115 in 12.1 overs with Marshall and by the time they were parted the game was virtually won,
Janes Fuller and Ian Saxelby had taken early wickets to put Somerset on the back foot after they had won the toss. Then Muttiah Muralitharan (2-20) and Ed Young (1-18) tied down the middle order.
After the game a delighted Hamish told this website: "I am so proud of the boys. We came here with a set game plan, which we had to adjust slightly because of the weather conditions, and a firm belief that we could win.
"To execute our plan so well with such a young side was fantastic. Taking early wickets always helped and we had Somerset 47-4 so from that point they were always under pressure.
"We were happy at the halfway stage that 140 was well below a par score at Taunton. Benny then batted superbly and we were able to get the sort of start to our innings that we needed.
"T20 is a momentum game and hopefully we can gain some from such a positive display. A couple more good results will put us in a very good position to qualify."
Director of cricket John Bracewell pointed to the difference in experience - and wage bills - between the two teams.
"It was good to see our young players execute some very high skill levels in front of a packed crowd," he said. "It was a bit of a hiding in the end.
"We are up and down as a team and lack of experience is the reason for that. Eventually our players will gain the experience to become consistent.
"I think we are about 800 caps down on Somerset and certainly a few hundred K down when it comes to wages. Tonight showed the potential we have as a side."
