Gloucestershire starlet Tom Price extends stay with Club to 2025

21 March 2023

Opening bowler Tom Price has signed a two-year contract extension with Gloucestershire until the end of the 2025 season.

23-year-old Price emerged as a key component of the Club’s pace bowling attack as he ended the 2022 County Championship season in blistering form.

Price was presented the Young Player of the Year award at Gloucestershire’s End of Season Gala Dinner following a fine campaign that saw him take 32 Division One wickets at an average of 20.09 and strike rate of 36.68. The bowler’s impressive 2022 record included an historic eight-wicket-haul against Warwickshire in the Club’s final home Championship match of the season.

Six wickets in as many One-Day Cup games for Shire took Price’s season total to 38, in addition to a number of handy knocks with the bat. 38* against Surrey exemplified Price’s calmness in pressurised batting situations as he helped Glos chase 293.

Speaking about his excitement for the years ahead, Price said:

“I’m really grateful for this opportunity and delighted to commit my future to the club. I really want to contribute to bringing success to the club and believe we have a squad capable of doing so. I’m excited to build on the back end of last season and see what we can do over the next few years.

“It’s a very tight-knit group of players, and a squad I love being a part of – but I’m also so proud to represent such a progressive club, with all the work being done off the field too, so I’m very happy to get the chance to extend my stay here.”

The news of Price’s deal comes just five days after the announcement of younger brother Ollie’s two-year extension.

On his hopes for Price over the next three seasons, Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, Dale Benkenstein, said:

“It's great to have Tom join brother Ollie in committing to Gloucestershire for the forthcoming seasons.

“Tom played a pivotal role in our success at the back end of the season and showed international qualities with the ball.

“He has an all-round ability that has exciting potential and I look forward to seeing this grow into match-winning performances for the team.”

Across all formats, Academy graduate Price has 54 wickets and 488 runs for Gloucestershire since his professional debut in 2019.

Speaking about Price’s contract extension, Performance Director at Gloucestershire Cricket, Steve Snell, said:

“Tom’s new contract is recognition for some outstanding performances for 2022. It also highlights the transition from an aspiring cricketer to a player who is capable of delivering match-winning performances for Gloucestershire.

“Tom’s ambition mirrors that of the Club where we encourage players to excel on and off the field. Tom is a multi-skilled player and I have no doubt he will be able to transfer his red-ball performances into decisive contributions in the shorter formats.

“Tom is a cricketer with an extremely high ceiling and there is certainly more to come from him in terms of match-influencing performances for Gloucestershire.”
