Gloucestershire sign Australia international Cameron Bancroft for 2024 season

2 February 2024

Gloucestershire Cricket is thrilled to announce the signing of Australian top-order batter Cameron Bancroft for the 2024 season.

The experienced Aussie international will be available to play in all formats of cricket for Gloucestershire during the upcoming season and will join up with his teammates at the Seat Unique Stadium ahead of the start of the County Championship campaign in April. Having previously played at Gloucestershire for a short stint in 2016 and a whole season in 2017, Bancroft will bring with him a wealth of experience into the Shire dressing room having amassed 14,500 domestic runs and 10 Test match appearances for his country.

A recent fixture in the Sydney Thunder team during the 2023/24 Big Bash League in Australia, Bancroft scored 82* vs England at the Gabba on the second day of his Test debut. In the two years that followed the 31-year-old went on to scored 446 Test runs for Australia.

Born in Attadale, Western Australia, Bancroft has recent experience of playing in the County Championship having spent one year playing at Durham in 2021 and four matches of Somerset’s Division One campaign in 2023.

During his last season at Gloucestershire in 2017, Bancroft, aged only 23 at the time, scored 685 runs at 40.29 in Division Two of the County Championship. He also scored 149 runs in the Natwest T20 Blast at an average of 29.80.

Speaking of his excitement at returning to Gloucestershire, Bancroft said: “I’m absolutely delighted to sign with Gloucestershire and to have the chance to return to the Club where I started my county career.

“I love playing County cricket and the opportunity to play all formats with the club is something I’m really excited about. With a new coach and a really talented playing group I’m looking forward to the season ahead.”

An accomplished batter across all formats, Bancroft has made 146 first-class appearances and currently plays for Western Australia in Australia, where he is the top-scorer in the Sheffield Shield with 512 runs at 56.88. Since making his first-class debut in 2013 Bancroft has scored 9,449 runs including 25 hundreds and 34 fifties.

Alongside his impressive red-ball record is Bancroft’s equally envious output in limited overs cricket. In 86 List A matches Bancroft has hit 2,809 runs at 41.29 and in his T20 career so far, has scored 2,279 runs from 99 appearances.

In acknowledgement to his scintillating form down under, Bancroft was named Australia men’s domestic player of the year 2024 earlier this week.

Mark Alleyne, Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, commented: “I’m really excited to have someone of Cameron’s ability and experience onboard for the season to come. We already have an exciting group of players here so to add to that with a player of international calibre in Cameron, it’s fantastic for me as a coach to have such depth in the squad.

“As well as his ability to score runs out in the middle, Cameron will add huge amounts of value to the changing room in terms of how he prepares for matches and the lessons he has learned as an international cricketer.

“I’m excited to have Cameron join us in April and am very much looking forward to working with him over the coming months.”
