Gloucestershire Cricket Board launch scoring app

19 June 2012

Supporters can watch live ball-by-ball coverage of a number of junior and district county matches this summer thanks to a new partnership between the Gloucestershire Cricket Board and pioneering scoring app CricHQ.

By downloading the free app onto their iPhone or Android or visiting the GCB website www.gloucestershirecricketboard.com  people can keep up-to-date with detailed information on every ball, with graphics on everything from where it pitched, to where it was hit and how many runs were scored.

GCB Cricket Development Manager Steve Silk: “The app is fantastic and it will completely revolutionise the way people are able to follow our junior age group cricket. Parents and supporters who are unable to attend a game will be able to log on and watch live graphics of every ball as it happens.”

Three county youth matches will be live-scored on the GCB website this week as part of the new partnership with CricHQ.

The first of these will take place from 1pm today when supporters logging on to www.gloucestershirecricketboard.com/index.php/crichq-live-scoring can watch live ball-by-ball coverage of Gloucestershire U12s v Wales at Frocester CC.

The CricHQ app - sponsored by Natwest - was developed in New Zealand and has been launched in the UK this summer with Gloucestershire and Sussex the first counties to try it out.

It will initially be used in Gloucestershire by coaches working with selected junior county and district teams but can be downloaded and used by anyone with a smartphone or iPad from www.CricHQ.com.

The County Cricket Club also plan to use the app’s detailed data when assessing trialists and players coming through their academy, as well as live scoring for some of the Second XI matches on www.gloscricket.co.uk/cricket/crichq-livescores

Stuart Barnes, Gloucestershire Cricket’s  Assistant Coach said, “One of the problems with coaching players is that we all see things differently. In terms of nominating players, sometimes a coach will put forward someone based on a hunch but with this app they will be able to back it up with hard facts.

“If it was a fast bowler for example and we were looking at them in one-day  games it would be interesting to know who the bowlers are that take the opening batsmen out . It could tell us the % of 1 run or dot balls and those that have a low boundary %. Information on how they get their wicket, when they get their wickets, who steps up when the game is in the balance.

There is still room for a coach’s opinion but CricHQ means they can back it up with hard facts.”

Rob Lynch, CricHQ’s Europe Manager said: “We are delighted with our partnership with the Gloucestershire Cricket Board and Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Our aim is to work with the Gloucestershire cricket community to showcase the benefits of using our products and what is possible by adopting today’s technology.”
