Glos wicketkeeper-batter Ben Wells agrees one-year contract extension

24 July 2023

Following a breakout T20 Blast campaign in which he played eight of Gloucestershire’s 12 T20 matches, Ben Wells has signed a one-year contract extension to the end of the 2024 season.

A standout performance in this year’s competition for Wells came against 2022 champions Hampshire Hawks when he hit a blistering 43* from just 22 balls to guide the Shire to an eight-wicket win.

Wells showed his potential that day with an array of innovative shots in a stunning partnership with fellow youngster Ben Charlesworth.

On signing his one-year contract extension, Wells said:

“I’m very happy to be staying in Bristol for another year. I’ve loved my time playing for Glos so far and I’m very thankful for the opportunity that the Club has given me.

“We’ve got an exciting group of young players at the moment and I’m looking forward to seeing what we can achieve the rest of this year and the years to come. Hopefully, I can play my part in that.”

Right-hander Wells made his debut for Gloucestershire in List A cricket against Lancashire in July 2021 before appearing in the County Championship just away to Glamorgan just three months later.

A career-best 76 in the 2022 Royal London Cup against Warwickshire secured Wells’ place in the 50-over side last season. The 22-year-old will be looking to top that in this year’s campaign when Glos begin their 2023 one-day campaign against Derbyshire during the Visit Cayman Island Cheltenham Cricket Festival.

Head Coach at Gloucestershire Cricket, Dale Benkenstein, said:

“We’re really pleased Ben has signed on for next season. It’s been a tricky couple of years for Ben with injuries, but, despite these setbacks, we’ve seen some real promise in first-team white ball cricket.

“Ben has proven he can score 360 degrees, and we’ve witnessed some exciting performances, particularly against Hampshire Hawks in the Blast.

“As the season progresses, it will be down to Ben to nail down a spot through consistent performances, which I have no doubt he has the ability to do.”
