Ed Celebrates County Cap In Style

11 July 2012

Ed Cowan celebrated the award of his Gloucestershire county cap with an unbeasten half-century as his side made 147-2 on a rain-affected opening day of the LV=County Championship match with Essex at Cheltenham.

Only 49 overs were possible after the start had been delayed until 1pm. But Cowan (51 not out) and Dan Housego (60) shared a second-wicket stand of 109 to put the hosts in a strong position.

For Australian Test batsman Cowan his innings completed a special day. Before the start he was presented with his county cap by Gloucestershire chairman Rex Body.

At most Ed will make five appearances for the club this summer, but he does not rule out a return in future years.

He told this website: “Ryan ten Doeschate was joking with me that it took six years for him to get a cap with Essex and here was I turning up on a wet Wednesday at Cheltenham and picking one up just like that.

“But I still see it as a very special honour and I respect Gloucestershire’s policy. The cap will be a treasured possession and I feel very privileged to have it.

“I really enjoy the dressing room here and there is a great coaching structure so I would love to play for the club again in the future.”

“There wasn’t much pace in the pitch, which made it difficult for stroke-making, but not good for bowling either. I think it will quicken up if only we get some sunshine and probably turn later in the game

“There are footmarks already and Harbhajan Singh spun a couple of deliveries so who knows? If we can post a decent score there is a lot of cricket still to be played.

“When the sun was out the ground looked spectacular. The oldest cricket festival in the world in full flight was great to be part of, but unfortunately the weather took over.”

Bad light ended play early and soon heavy rain set in leaving the umpires with no alternative but to signal the close.
