Donald (Don to all) McLean

30 May 2012

Donald (Don to all) McLean has died aged 93.  He was an "ever-present" at Gloucestershire Cricket's headquarters and at the team's scenes of triumph during the turn-of-century era when the Club achieved so much and laid the foundations for more of today.

And his role at Nevil Road was to a large extent unique - he had his own printing press and produced the bulk of the printing material needed by the Club, from the day's scorecard to the Annual Report and Accounts, and a great deal in between.

Don, who spent his professional life in printing moved, soon after retiring, into a small room at the back of the Pavilion, with hastily-acquired equipment, later augmented by extra items widening the range of products, the whole much more economic to the balance sheet.

But Don was not simply the printer.  He became an enthusiastic member of the Supporters' Club in the 1950's and the off-shoot Supporters' Social Club (soon to be in the new Jessop Tavern).  He was also elected a member of the Club's Bristol Regional Committee and in all those supportive activities played a large part in helping to promote a large number of social events, both indoor and out.

Don's name will long be remembered in Gloucestershire cricket in Bristol and again as an ever present supporter cheering the team on to victory on numerous cup finals at Lord's.
