Alex And Hamish Cement Strong Position

21 April 2012

Alex Gidman led from the front as Gloucestershire established a potentially winning position on the third day of the LV County Championship with Kent at Canterbury.

The skipper was unbeaten on 60 at the close, having shared an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 94 with Hamish Marshall (55 not out) in a second innings total of 191-3.

That gave Gloucestershire a commanding lead of 296 with seven wickets in hand as earlier in the day they had bowled out Kent for 150 from an overnight position of 119-6.

Will Gidman finished with 5-43 from 16.3 overs so it was an excellent day for the brothers. Now Alex is hoping his side can press home their advantage on the final day.

He told this website: "We have had a tough couple of weeks on the road so I was delighted with the way the team rocked up and fought for everything today.

"We will need some more runs because Kent have a strong batting line-up and we are a bowler light because of David Payne's injury.

"But we are in a good position and hopefully Hamish and I will be in the right place to assess conditions tomorrow morning. The pitch is pretty placid so there is still a lot of work to do.

"It was good for the two of us to get some runs and get our season going. Batting has been difficult all around the country during the opening weeks so it was great to spend some time at the crease."
