Weekend match review

24/04/2011

Gloucestershire Academy had a double header this weekend playing Bristol Cricket Club on Saturday and Frocester Cricket Club on Sunday.

Saturday vs Bristol CC:

Bristol CC won the toss and elected to bat first, a decision they may have regretted when left arm swing bowler Matt Taylor (younger brother of Jack) took wickets with the first and third balls of the game. He finished with figure of 5over, 0 maidens, 7 runs and taking 2 wickets.

The fast bowling department backed Taylor up with new signing, Graeme McCarter bowling 6 overs, 3 maidens, 11 runs, and took 3 wickets. The star performance with the ball came from 15 year old off spinner Miles Hammond who took 5 for 30 off his 8 overs. The good all round bowling performance restricted Bristol CC to 153.

Gloucestershire Aacdemy’s batting made short work of this despite losing Beard early. Saxelby and Christian Purchase got the team off to a quick start scoring 17 and 21 respectively. Uzi Qureshi came to the wicket at the fall of Saxelby and scored an excellent 51 not out, with Jack Taylor adding a rapid 48 off just 31 deliveries. Taylor’s dismissal meant Captain Richard Dawson partnered Qureshi to see the Academy win in just 23 overs for a loss of 4 wickets.

Sunday vs Frocester CC:

Gloucestershire Academy played a 45 over games against Frocester CC, winning the toss Gloucestershire Academy elected to bat but were in early trouble with the removal of Qureshi (0) and Banerjee (10). A solid partnership between Christian Purchase (47) and Lloyd Evans (17) steadied the ship with Purchase striking the ball hard and clearing the boundary with ease.

Jack Taylor came to the wicket at the fall of Evans and followed his 48 on Saturday with a quick fire 33 before both fell quickly. At 120-5 the Academy seemed in a little trouble and when Sam Bracey went for 11, Joe Brimble joined Alex Spencer at the crease. Spencer (14) played the anchor innings whilst Joe Brimble struck a run a ball, 52, and with some late hitting by Craig Miles (13). Gloucestershire Academy finished on a total of 237 all out.

As with the previous day Gloucestershire Academy struck with the ball in the first over when an excellent delivery from seam bowler Jordan Price removed Nick Trainor. Price bowled an excellent five over spell which really set the Academy in good stead in the field taking 2-11. Craig Miles followed up a good performance in the week by taking 2-17 and Frocester’s middle order were unable to play the spin duo of J Taylor (3-38) and V Banerjee (3-30). Seeing Frocester bowled out for 136.
