GCCC Academy V Bristol University match report

23/04/2010

Gloucestershire CCC Academy played their second match of the season on Sunday 18th April vs Bristol University.

Again the weather proved very favourable for the Academy to play fixtures in April.  Bristol University were the opposition for this friendly match and another very good game of cricket was played.

Winning the toss Academy Captain Jack Taylor chose to bat. This fixture provided a number of young players with their first opportunity to play for the GCCC Academy.

Joe Barrett, a fourteen year old left hander, opened the batting with Michael Beard and they put on 37 for the 1st wicket before Barrett misjudged an arm ball from the off spinner. Beard played well till 27 and was again out to the off spin caught on the drive.

Ben Ringrose, who had just returned from touring the Caribbean with the South West of England U15s, came to the crease and together with Anthony Ireland they put on a good stand for the third wicket until they were again undone by off spin and Ringrose was bowled for 22. Ireland batted sensibly and saw his new partner Jack Taylor in before falling for 37. Taylor continued to time the ball well, as he had done for Gloucestershire’s 2nd XI earlier in the week, and when joined by Gregg Fury they really pushed the score on.  Taylor made a fine 87 of just 70 balls and was out with four over’s left in the innings this saw Fury take the leading role and strike the ball to all parts making 76 off just 42 deliveries.  With all middle and lower order batters striking at more than a run a ball, GCCC Academy amassed 321.

Undaunted by this task the University side began well and looked in the game. They did struggle to get away the pace and bounce found by Craig Miles, who put in his best spell so far for the Academy.  Taylor then turned to his senior bowlers bringing himself and Jack Creswell on.  This reduced the run rate and the wickets began to fall.  Creswell taking 2 for 29 off his 10 overs and Taylor 2 for 49. After looking in the game at one stage Bristol Uni were restricted to just 241 from their 50 overs.

GCCC Academy Director, Owen Dawkins said “I would like to thank Bristol Uni for hosting the Academy and providing the Academy with a good day’s cricket. Looking ahead to this weekend’s matches; the double header will be a tough challenge. We are lucky to be hosted by Frocester again on Saturday for a rematch in a 45 over game which is due to start at 1.30pm.  Then on Sunday we have a match away at Millfield School, where last year we came off second best in a very good game of cricket.”

All GCCC Academy match reports will appear on the Academy section of the website first.
