Gloucestershire player Jack Taylor was the first recipient of the ‘Phil Garner Award for Excellence’ at the recent Oxfordshire Cricket Presentation Evening held at The Hawkwell House Hotel, Oxford.

Jack has developed through the Oxfordshire Youth system, played Minor County cricket and has gained a full time contract with Gloucestershire CCC, having been part of their Academy for a number of years.

He was unable to attend to receive the award as he is currently playing in Australia, but will return to the county ground for pre-season training later this month.

The award was presented to Kevin, Jack’s father, by Mary Garner, Phil’s widow.

The award is in memory of Phil Garner who died last year. He was captain of Oxfordshire from 1982-93 and was also the first captain of the England Amateur XI. He led the side to two Minor County Championships during his time as captain. Following discussions with Mary, it was decided that the most appropriate way to honour Phil’s outstanding contribution to Oxfordshire Cricket was to institute the ‘Phil Garner Award for Excellence’. He always strived to be the best he could and he encouraged players to be the best they could.
