Launch of 2010/11 disability schools programme

10/09/2010

Children from local disability schools will enjoy free cricket coaching at the County Ground, Bristol thanks to the disability schools programme.

Children will be at the event on Tuesday 14th September to receive some free cricket coaching from GCB coaches, meet some Gloucestershire players and enjoy some professional cricket, watching Gloucestershire in their LV=CC match against Surrey.

Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Gloucestershire Cricket Board and John Lewis Cribbs Causeway have arranged this joint event to celebrate the start of the 2010/11 disability schools programme.

The John Lewis sponsorship of Gloucestershire Crickets disability cricket programme has allowed free coaching sessions to be offered to all 15 special schools in South Gloucestershire and Bristol.

This event is just one of the many disability coaching initiatives that the John Lewis sponsorship help cover, as both Gloucestershire Cricket and John Lewis Cribbs Causeway join together to introduce young people with disabilities into cricket and allow greater involvement with the sport.

Alan Andrews, Community Liaison Co-ordinator of John Lewis Cribbs Causeway, said: “At John Lewis Cribbs Causeway we are proud to support Disability Cricket. This is the second year we’ve supported the scheme, and we are delighted to help Gloucestershire County Cricket Club continue its fantastic work to offer young disabled people the chance to play cricket and receive professional coaching.

“John Lewis Cribbs Causeway has a strong history of supporting sports events in the local community, from football and cricket to athletics. Sport is an incredibly powerful way to engage with young people, and Disability Cricket proves how well cricket can do this.”

Chris Munden, Gloucestershire Cricket Board Community Coach, said: “This is a great initiative as it is really important to offer even more children with disabilities the opportunity to improve their cricketing skills in a safe and enjoyable environment.  I would like to thank John Lewis for their support of Disability Cricket as their sponsorship allows us to run a whole host of events within our disability programme that otherwise would not be possible.”

GCCC Commercial Manager, Kevin Ashley: "We are really pleased that the schools disabilities programme will be in place for another year. It is fantastic to be able to continue offering these coaching sessions to special schools in South Gloucestershire and Bristol. Coaching sessions like those at this event are only possible due to the generous sponsorship and continued support from John Lewis.”
