John Lewis supports Table Top Cricket

31/08/2010

In March a two day Disability Table Cricket competition had been played at Gloucestershire County Cricket Club thanks to the generous support of John Lewis Cribbs Causeway. The winners of this competition progressed to the final of the national table top cricket competition held at Lords in June.

After winning the Regional Final in March the team held regular lunch time practices at Culverhill School to improve their fielding and batting skills and were very excited about the Final.

The team consisted of pupils from Brimsham Green School: Betty Brady and Sam Terry, Culverhill School: Mathew Badman, Laura Chick and Lucio Visser and Beaconrise Primary School Emma Coles.

The first game was against John Henry Newman and the team won 305 /3 to their 218 /8. The second game was against last year’s Finalist and despite putting up a very tough opposition the team lost 273 /3 to 296 /0. With little break in between the third match against Percy Headley we won again which put us in a good position for the fourth match before lunch against Thomas Wolsey which unfortunately we lost. With very close scores in this pool the positions were decided on from wickets for and against putting us 3/5 to play Penhall for 5th and 6th position. Unfortunately fatigue had set in for the last match and despite the teams tremendous efforts we lost by 5 runs so were 6th overall.

During the day Ricky Groves from Eastenders and Mike Gatting spoke to the players and watched the games. Throughout the day we also had great support from Abbie Michaelson representative from BT, along with getting us food and drinks he could not have given any greater moral support to the team.

Four students from the Castle school were also at the final, having been selected to help with the scoring and umpiring.

At the presentation pupils were thrilled to receive their certificates and medals and Betty Brady who had been an outstanding Captain throughout the day was honoured with being selected for the 2010 England Team.

We now look forward to next year’s competition.
