After receiving a resolution to grant planning permission to expand their ground last year, Gloucestershire County Cricket Club has now decided to implement only one part of their planning application.  For the foreseeable future they will not be building the stands adjacent to Kennington Avenue, resulting result in a capacity of circa 17,500, rather than the 20,000 originally envisaged, of which circa 7,500 will be permanent.

They have also reached an agreement with Linden Homes which will see the proposed student accommodation being replaced by a range of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments as there is no longer the demand for this accommodation.  These new apartments will include underground parking.  Linden Homes with GCCC will be submitting a full application for this in the spring.

These revised plans will the subject of a public exhibition held as follows:

Friday 11th February, 3.00 – 7.30pm
Saturday 12th February, 10.00am – 2.00pm
In the Grace Room, The County Ground, Nevil Road

Tom Richard, Chief Executive of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club said “This is a great opportunity to proceed with our much needed ground development plans. It is excellent to work with Linden Homes on this project.”

A spokesperson for Linden Homes said “Linden Homes is delighted to be working with GCCC on this project, and our team looks forward to meeting with local residents and groups to find out their views on plans for apartments instead of student accommodation.”

THE FACTS

  • GCCC received a resolution to grant planning permission for improvements to their ground in 2010.  This included erecting new stands, and extending their existing pavilion.
  • It also included a block of student accommodation capable of housing 350 students.
  • All of these plans had been the subject of an extensive public consultation over several months, at which concerns were raised about the impact of traffic and student parking on local residents in particular.
  • GCCC has now decided to implement only one part of their planning application - for the foreseeable future they will not be building the stands adjacent to Kennington Avenue.  This will result in a capacity of circa 17,500, rather than the 20,000 originally envisaged, of which circa 7,500 will be permanent. This compares to the previous scheme which proposed 18,500 permanent seats.
  • GCCC and Linden Homes will be submitting a new detailed planning application to cover both the apartments and revisions to the ground to be clear on precisely what will be delivered.
  • They have also reached an agreement with Linden Homes which will see the proposed student accommodation being replaced by around 150 1 and 2 bedroom apartments.
  • These new apartments will include underground parking, which was a concern for residents during the previous round of consultation as there was no on-site provision for student parking.
  • Linden Homes and GCCC will be submitting a full application for this and amendments to the cricket proposals in the spring.
  • Both the Linden Homes’ plans, and the revised plans for the Cricket Club, will be the subject of a public consultation in February.
