Sussex v Gloucestershire

09/07/2010

LV=County Championship Division Two

Day Three. At Arundel.

By Richard Latham

Gloucestershire collapsed to the bowling of former Ashes hero Monty Panesar as Sussex clinched an eight-wicket victory on the third day at Arundel.

The home side began the day be extending their first innings total to 389 to earn a lead of 82 and then shot out their opponents for a miserable 131, despite Hamish Marshall’s valiant 89 not out, to leave themselves only 50 to win.

Almost a year to the day since his heroics with the bat helped England save the first Ashes Test in Cardiff, Panesar took advantage of a wearing pitch to claim 5-44 and match figures of 8-114.

He was well supported by off-spinner Ollie Rayner, who took 3-24, but Gloucestershire folded under pressure as they lost their last seven wickets for 52 in 16 overs.

Sussex lost both openers before reaching their target of 50 in 11 overs and they now go four points clear of Gloucestershire in the Second Division promotion battle.

The day began badly for Alex Gidman and his team when Sussex’s last four wickets added a further 75 runs.

Robin-Martin-Jenkins missed out on a hundred in his last Championship appearance, falling for 78, but Yasir Arafat contributed his first half-century of the season. Vikram Banerjee finished with 5-94.

Gloucestershire then had to negotiate a short period before lunch and failed to do so. Abdul-Kadeer Ali was lbw playing no shot to Arafat and Panesar also struck straight away as his arm ball pinned Jonathan Batty leg-before.

Chris Dent drove to second slip, but from 27-3 Marshall and Gidman led a brief recovery with a stand of 52, ended when Gidman was superbly caught at short leg by Michael Thornely off Rayner.

Gloucestershire caved in. Panesar defeated Chris Taylor’s sweep, had James Franklin taken at short leg and Jon Lewis at slip before claiming his fifth wicket when Banerjee played back to a ball which scuttled through and was lbw.

At the other end it often appeared as if Marshall was involved in a different game. He played some superb back-foot shots off the spinners and hit 15 fours in 130 balls.

There was negligible support at the other end. Gemaal Hussain drove to mid off and last man Steve Kirby was taken at backward short leg to give Rayner the final two wickets of an innings which lasted just 40.3 overs.
