Gloucestershire v Middlesex

Jon Lewis claimed four wickets and Gemaal Hussain three as Gloucestershire moved into second place in the LV=County Championship Division Two with a ten-wicket win over Middlesex at the County Ground.

After the home side had been bowled out for 420, with a lead of 184, their seamers got to work with devastating effect, bowling out the opposition for 228 to set up victory inside three days.

Lewis (4-45) and Hussain (3-61) had the best figures, but were well supported by Anthony Ireland, James Franklin and the unlucky Steve Kirby, who somehow finished without a wicket.

The decision to leave out a specialist spinner was vindicated as only one batsman was dismissed by slow bowling, John Simpson, who fell lbw to Chris Taylor.

Lewis destroyed any hope Middlesex had of getting back into the game by removing the top three in their order with only 67 on the board. Scott Newman was lbw for five to the new ball.

It was 40-2 when Sam Robson was caught behind for 12 and wicketkeeper Jonathan Batty produced a better catch, diving to his right, to remove the dangerous Owais Shah for 32.

Soon Middlesex were 79-4 as Dawid Malan edged James Franklin into the slip cordon where Chris Dent took the catch. From then on it was just a case of whether the match would go into a final day.

Neil Dexter did his best to prolong events, riding his luck with a few edges through the slips to score 11 fours in a 47-ball innings of 54, which was ended by another Dent slip catch off Hussain.

John Simpson had helped add 60 for the fifth wicket, but with his score on 23 he fell lbw to the off-spin of Taylor.

Hussain sent back Josh Davey and Tom Smith to take his wicket tally in Championship cricket this season to 39 and Lewis ended the innings by clean bowling Toby Roland-Jones.

There were 17 overs left in the day when Gloucestershire began their second innings and Abdul-Kadeer Ali had no intention of hanging about.

The opener raced to 16 in only the third over as he and Batty confidently reached their target off the first ball of the 14th over.
