Worcestershire v Gloucestershire

31/05/2010

LV=County Championship

Division Two

Day three at New Road

Gloucestershire will go into the last day of the Championship match at New Road with a lead of 46 runs, but with just five second-innings wickets left.

After the hosts had been bowled out for 388, to establish a first-innings advantage of 143, Gloucestershire reached 189-5 at stumps, thanks mainly to 50 from Hamish Marshall and 43 from Jonathan Batty.

Gloucestershire lost Steve Snell, caught at second slip, for seven with just 19 on the board. Then, Chris Dent was caught behind for 21 as he attempted to pull a ball from Jack Shantry.

Batty and Marshall played fluently until both were dismissed by Alan Richardson. Skipper Gidman departed for 18, caught at the wicket off Shantry, and much now depends on Chris Taylor (18 not out) and James Franklin (21 not out), who have put on 35 so far for the sixth wicket.

Earlier, Worcestershire's tail had wagged effectively in adding a further 159 for the last four wickets.

Moeen Ali, unbeaten on 70 overnight, survived a strong appeal for a catch behind off Jon Lewis in the opening over of the day, and went on to make 106 before being dismissed by Vikram Banerjee's left-arm spin.

Ben Scott scored 67 before he was bowled by Anthony Ireland, while Banerjee had Richardson stumped by Batty for five shortly before lunch.

There was frustration after the interval for Gloucestershire as Matt Mason hit 27 off 18 balls, with one four and three sixes, before Jon Lewis dismissed him to end the innings.
