Derbyshire v Gloucestershire
27/05/2010
LV=County Championship Division Two
Day Four. At Derby.
By Richard Latham
A devastating opening burst from Steve Kirby and Jon Lewis set up a 134-run victory for Gloucestershire on the final day at Derby.
Kirby removed openers Wayne Madsen and Chris Rogers, while Lewis accounted for Garry Park and Greg Smith.
Before they knew it, Derbyshire, who had begun on five without loss needing 301 to win, were 15-4 with their top order blown away.
From then on the result was never in doubt on a pitch offering the seamers the assistance of variable bounce.
Only first innings centurion Chesney Hughes was able to combat Gloucestershire's rampant attack for long.
Dan Redfern helpe him add 47 for the fifth wicket before Jonathan Batty, back behind the stumps after dislocating a finger earlier in the game, took one of three catches to send him packing off the bowling of James Franklin for 27.
Gloucestershire had managed to remove the top five Derbyshire batsmen without even employing Vikram Banerjee, who had been reckoned to be their last day danger-man.
But the left-arm spinner soon added to his four first innings wickets when brought on by Alex Gidman. He had Robin Peterson caught by Steve Snell for three to make it 84-6.
Gemaal Hussain weighed in with the wicket of Tom Poynton, while Banerjee struck again to dismiss Tom Lungley.
But Hughes was in no mood to surrender tamely and hit 8 fours in his 136-ball innings before being ninth man out, leg-before to Lewis.
The experienced pace bowler soon cleaned up last man Atif Sheikh and by mid afternoon Gloucestershire were celebrating their fourth Championship win of the season.
This one was all the more satisfactory for having been achieved from a difficult position as Derbyshire looked favourites having established a first innings lead of 103.
But Chris Dent's 98 and a solid third day batting display by the team turned the tide and 20 points was the reward when the bowlers did their job too.
