Glamorgan v Gloucestershire

20/05/2010

LV=County Championship Division Two

Day Four. At Cardiff

By Richard Latham

Gloucestershire's winning run of three Championship games came to an end in disappointing fashion at the Swalec Stadium with a poor final day batting effort.

The visitors began on 12-1 needing a further 154 to make their opponents bat again, but never looked likely to bring that about as they were dismissed before tea for 162 to lose by an innings and four runs.

The result took Glamorgan top of the LV=County Championship Second Division and left Gloucestershire among the chasing pack. It was the first time the Welsh county had won three successive games in the competition since 2004.

There was a disappointing start to the day for the visitors when Jonathan Batty, on 11, was well caught at first slip by Jim Allenby off Huw Waters with the total only advanced to 25.

Hamish Marshall and Alex Gidman then provided some hope with a stand of 40 before Marshall fell lbw to Allenby for 22.

Worryingly for Gloucestershire the wickets had fallen without Glamorgan introducing their spinners. When Dean Cosker and Robert Croft were brought into the attack they soon had an influence.

Cosker's left-arm spin accounted for Gidman, lbw for 34 to make it 77-4, and Chris Taylor, caught at short leg by Gareth Rees for ten with the score 99. The wickets either side of lunch had Glamorgan scenting victory.

It was 112-6 when Steve Snell was run out by Ben Wright attempting a single that wasn't there and 119-7 when James Franklin was lbw to Croft, having taken 95 balls to score 28.

Gloucestershire had become tied down by the two spinners and the end wasn't far away as Vikram Banerjee also departed leg before to Croft with only four more runs added.

Jon Lewis held up Glamorgan's victory push, batting for more than an hour for his 37 not out. But he ran out of partners as Gemaal Hussain was caught off bat and pad the ball after lofting Jamie Dalrymple for six and Anthony Ireland was run out by David Harrison attempting a second run.

Cosker finished with 3-32 off 25 overs, more than half of which were maidens, while Croft returned 2-51 off 28.1 overs.
