Glamorgan v Gloucestershire

18/05/2010

LV County Championship Division Two

Day Two. At Cardiff.

By Richard Latham

A 51-ball half-century from Jon Lewis set the tone for some quick scoring on the second day of the Championship match at the Swalec Stadium.

Gloucestershire began on 303-5, with the sixth-wicket stand between Chris Taylor and Steve Snell already worth 79, and they took it to 120 before Taylor fell lbw to Jim Allenby for 65.

That unleashed Lewis to hit 7 fours and a six, while Snell went on to make 71 before his side were bowled out for 417.

Glamorgan were equally positive as the powerful Mark Cosgrove launched their reply with seven boundaries himself and were 257-3 at the close, with former England Under-19 batsman Ben Wright unbeaten on 77.

Taylor's departure came with Gloucestershire six runs short of a fourth batting point in the 108th over. But Lewis ensured they got it with a top-edged six over fine leg off Huw Waters.

It was 373-7 when Snell edged Allenby to wicketkeeper Mark Wallace and departed having faced 123 balls and hit 7 fours and 2 sixes.

Lewis then hit three fours in an over off David Harrison as he breezed to his half-century, bringing the 400 up before falling lbw to the spin of Dean Cosker.

Robert Croft then got in on the act for Glamorgan, wrapping up the innings by pinning Vikram Banerjee leg before and gaining a similar decision against Anthony Ireland.

Allenby, who had Lewis dropped on 15, finished with 3-71, while there were two wickets each for Waters, Cosker and Croft.

Gareth Rees then helped Cosgrove put 50 on the board in Glamorgan's reply by the tenth over, which saw Australian Cosgrove bowled by Ireland having looked in menacing form.

Ireland repeated the feat to remove Rees off an inside edge for 48 with the score on 125, following up his impressive contribution to Gloucestershire's previous Championship game against Leicestershire.

But Glamorgan skipper Jamie Dalrymple counter attacked with 7 fours in a 75-ball fifty before dancing down the pitch to Banerjee, who saw him coming and beat him for Jonathan Batty to complete a stumping.

That was 203-3 and Gloucestershire had their first bowling point. But Wright maintained the attractive batting of the day by reaching his half-century off 68 balls, with 5 fours and a six.

The experience Mike Powell was with him at the close and Gloucestershire will want to part them early in the morning if they are to have realistic hopes of a first innings lead.
