14/05/2010
Clydesdale Bank 40 Group B
At Lord's
By Richard Latham
Gloucestershire pulled off their second win at Lord's this season, beating Middlesex by 77 runs in a one-sided Clydesdale Bank 40 contest.
The Gladiators posted 246-9 after Alex Gidman had won the toss, Hamish Marshall (85) and Jonathan Batty (54) sharing a third-wicket stand of 74 in ten overs.
In reply Middlesex collapsed from 111-3 to be bowled out for 169 in only 31.3 overs, Anthony Ireland claiming 3-36.
It was a comprehensive victory for Gloucestershire, who had already won at the home of cricket in the LV=County Championship this season.
They made a poor start when James Frankin fell to Pedro Collins with only three runs on the board, but Will Porterfield (21) helped Batty add 55 for the second wicket.
Then Marshall got to work with a 71-ball innings that featured 6 fours and a six. He and Batty took the score to 132 before the wicketkeeper, who had reached a half-century off 74 balls, with five boundaries, was caught by Collins off Shaun Udal.
Steve Snell, Chris Taylor and Gidman could contribute only 29 runs between them, but Marshall stood firm until being seventh man out with the total on 214.
Jon Lewis put the finishing touch on the Gladiators' innings with 21 not out off 14 balls and ensured the home side faced a challenging target. Collins finished with 3-46.
The Panthers looked to be making a fist of it after Lewis sent back Andrew Strauss for 14 and Ireland had Scott Newman caught by Vikram Banerjee for 11.
Owais Shah and Dawid Malan added 46 for the third wicket before Shah (32) fell to a catch by Lewis off Franklin.
Neil Dexter was stumped off Banerjee for 16 and the left-arm spinner also accounted for Gareth Berg (17) in taking 2-31 from five overs.
The key wicket of Malan came with the score on 111 when he was run out by Batty for 42, having faced 55 balls and hit 4 fours. At 143-6 Middlesex were in deep trouble and never looked like recovering.
Steve Kirby (2-22) and Ireland wrapped up the tail as the Gladiators bounced back from their disappointing defeat by Essex Eagles at Chelmsford.
